To put that in practical terms: saving 20 watts at 40 km/h translates to approximately 1 minute saved over a 40-kilometre effort. For a competitive cyclist, that is not a marginal gain — it is a decisive one. For a professional chasing a Strava segment or a club rider targeting a podium finish, those watts are the difference between the front group and the chase pack.

Weight savings on a bicycle are not created equal. Reducing rotational mass — the weight of your wheels — has a compounding effect that exceeds simple gram-for-gram comparisons with frame or component weight. Every time you accelerate, every time you tackle a climb, your wheels must be spun up to speed. The lighter and stiffer that rotating mass, the more responsive and efficient that effort becomes.

A premium carbon wheelset will typically weigh between 1,300g and 1,600g for a complete pair, compared to 1,700g to 2,000g for a comparable quality aluminium set. That 300–500g reduction in rotational weight translates into noticeably snappier acceleration out of corners, reduced fatigue on long climbs, and a livelier, more connected ride feel overall.

Carbon fibre's exceptional stiffness-to-weight ratio is central to this. Unlike aluminium, which must be built thicker to achieve comparable strength, carbon fibre can be precisely layered and oriented to deliver stiffness exactly where the wheel structure demands it — at the hub flanges, through the rim bed, and laterally under hard cornering loads. The result is a wheel that doesn't flex under power, meaning more of your energy goes directly into forward motion rather than being absorbed by lateral deflection.

100km done. But what was the time?

Coming in at 2 hours 3mins 59 secs, James averaged a HUGE 48.4 km/h (30.07 mph) - smashing the previous record. In addition to this, James completed his 100km over 15 minutes faster than the upright cycling record - highlighting the speed and aerodynamics of James and his equipment.

James was quickly able to settle into race pace and looked strong throughout. James received encouragement from friends as he closed in on the final few laps - trying to hold his speed as long as he could.

The gear that James is using for his record at the Geraint Thomas Velodrome in Newport is a custom-built Phantom Mini-T aero trike– Designed & built by Tim Corbett. This is fitted with an enormous 90 tooth carbon chainring from Digirit and the 20 inch AIR-Disc wheels from Streamline Cycling.

James Coxon of Wales is an esteemed para-athlete with great accolades for his recumbent cycling. Holding British Para 2022, 2023 and World Champion titles in his discipline, there is no rider more suited to the challenge than James.

A new 100km World Record 

With several big continental teams represented - Including the infamous Colpack-Ballan team - we had our work cut out for us. Holding position near the front of the bunch we came into the last 500m with Colpack on one side, and a bush on the other... Now it was time to be brave. Ben threw a nudge into the rider closing us in, giving me just enough space to launch on the outside and the 200m drag race ensued. This drag race I did not win, coming up short to finish second place. It was a good day out and an excellent last two races of the trip. The Streamline wheelset I used proved fantastic during the hilly races, which were extremely selective. Next time I'll make sure I have some AIR-64 fairings for those flat bunch sprints...

Our best results came in the final two races, on back to back days. 

The first was a hilly 180km race with a brutal finishing circuit. Our recon ride proved helpful as we were able to dominate the final breakway, with 3 of the 8 riders representing Wheelbase. 

After getting distanced on the final climb I managed to bounce back and sprint for 6th at the line. Up the road, teammate George Wood had managed to clinch victory, propelled by a strong leadout from teammate Tom Martin. Placing us 1st, 4th and 6th on the day, with one more opportunity to go.

This final race was a welcome change, a flat parcours! This was well received as we dragged our heavy legs up to the startline. Our legs eventually got turning though, and we got 3 riders in the 35-man breakaway that slipped away with 30km remaining. I missed it, but kept my cool.

I held my nerve until the one lap to go marker, then unleashed a  hail-mary solo bridging attempt to chase them down. After getting good initial separation from the peloton it was looking promising, but there was a long way to go to get to the breakaway. 

The 25 seconds gap began to close and eventually the junction was made with half a lap remaining. I found my teammates, we regrouped, and planned our tactics for the final leadout.

We began to find our flow in the next series of races, bagging two more top ten finishes in Foreign National 1.12 races, including the prestigious, 77th edition of the Florence-Viareggio classic. The best was still yet to come though...

When one thinks of Italian roads they may envision vineyards, hairpins, Ferraris and smooth well maintained roads. The race organisers had other ideas. 

With roundabouts, potholes and oil slicks galore, it was carnage. 

One race in particular stands out, the GP Rovescala. A hilly race that completed 7 laps totalling 140km and over 2300m climbing. While the 4km climbs tested the stiffness and lightweight construction of the wheels, it was the downhills that provided the real challenge. Potholes and bumps on corners were smashed through at over 80kph, testing the limits of rider and equipment. One blessing was that the heavy rain downpour that persisted through the race briefing curtailed before we rolled out...

The 8-race block would cover a variety of terrain, but the general theme the race organisers followed was to find a big hill of 3-7km, and to do as many laps of it as you could within 140-180km. 

When picking equipment, keeping weight down was a great consideration but we also wanted to have a fast setup that wouldn't compromise rhw aerodynamic performance for the whittled-down bunch sprints at the finale either.  

The Streamline Air-BASE 32mm wheels provided the perfect platform, weighing about 1400g and offering nearly as much aero advantage as the AIR-64 covers. These were laced with Specialized Turbo Cotton 26c tyres for the first four races, then 28mm Vittoria Corsa G2.0 tyres for the latter half. Latex tubes were used throughout to drop some weight and to keep rolling resistance low. This  was a familiar combination used during a successful 2022 hill climb campaign, so this gave me confidence it was a safe bet for high performance for the hilly races.

Italian racing is old school, fast, chaotic, but most of all, incredibly beautiful.

With a hilly selection of foreign national races, it was time to put the Streamline AIR-Base wheels through their paces.

Streamline Goes Racing

With the general classification lead going into the road race, it was key to save energy where possible and to be vigilant not to miss an important split. Using his 64 front cover and Air-BASE rear, Chris Smart was able to infiltrate the key 8-man breakaway of the day with his GC rivals. On what was a particularly wet day, the rim-brake performance of the wheels held up and Chris was able to navigate the bunch sprint safely without losing time to win the weekend overall in thrilling fashion.

The same setup was used for the TTT which was done in pairs. Back-to-back wins in these key stages gave Chris the lead in the overall with just the road race remaining...

For the morning hill climb riders took on the short but steep hairpins of the Serpentine hill. The Air-BASE setup with its lightweight 35mm rim depth being the riders' choice for the event.

A quick cover change was made for the afternoon individual time trial. The flat course around the Island demanded one thing only: speed. It was with this in mind that the Streamline riders opted for the fastest combination of the Air-64 front and Air-DISC cover for the rear. 

 With a range of events including timetrials, roadraces and hill climbs, the cycling festival on Bute was the perfect place to exploit the versatility of the Streamline Aerodynamic Interchangable Rim (AIR) system.

 Frustrated with the significant cost barriers to participating in Ironman events, Zach acknowledges that for many, even getting to the start line with decent equipment is a challenge. Finishing his swim/bike/run Zach averaged 44kph over the 90 kilometre course of the bike leg. While impressed with the speed and performance of the wheelset, what astounded Zach was the value and versatility of the Aerodynamic Interchangeable Rims (AIR) system. 

At some point in their journey, every triathlete is faced with the same question; "have you done an Ironman?"
